Having been a denizen of Pleasure Faire since circa 1967, I too remember the quasi-anarchistic community that thrived in the Oaks of Agoura, Peacock Gap and Black Point. We thrived because we were small and nearly unnoticed by the Mrs. Grundy's of the world. (Except for Mrs. W. Brennan). Security was on our side and protected us from official intruders. They also ran the pharmaceuticals department. As we grew and popped our heads up more blatantly, more shots came our way. How Madam managed to keep us in permits and licenses will always be a mystery to me but despite those who would whine about her incompetence, she managed to keep the faire going for 30 years and if you count REC as a faire, we are coming up on 40 years. That is a long time to keep any business afloat, especially one so front loaded with controversial folk. The divorce was certainly a blow but people do get divorced and move on. What personal difficulties prompted their split is none of my or anyone else's business. (I always expected Ron to open an event but I guess his involvement with AYLI is as close as he is going to get.). As to the rebel days of the 60's, they are gone and I do not expect to look upon them again. Yes there will always be those who piss and moan about everything under the sun but I doubt a concerted national consensus will rematerialize. Of course G.W. is doing a lot to unify his opposition but that does not come close to the debacle of Viet Nam. I would also like to see a separating of Myth from fact in some form. Did H. H. & Co. REALLY get robbed on the Cornell Road cut off on the way to the bank with receipts? What about that story about the Co. credit cards in Haiti? Was he really collecting mental disability from the government while running security? Are these all just drivel or true? As for me and my household, we create theatrical experiences. We did it for Theme Events, RPF, LHC and briefly for REC. We did it for Live Oak and will do it for Stafford Lake. Just because I do not agree with everything a company does, does not mean I can not work with them. I reserve the right to run my own show the way I want and I surrender that same concept to whoever is running the show for whom I am working. |
